ANISE SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY Scientific Name: Papilio zelicaon Distinguishing Characteristics: A large, beautiful butterfly with a 2-1/2 to 3" wing span, yellow-black pattern on the wings and a "tail" on its hind wing. Importance in the Web of Life This butterfly pollinates plants. It also serves as food for birds. Cool Facts: You can attract these butterflies to your backyard or local park by planting parsley or other herbs such as angelica. Threats: Roadside spraying of herbicides puts them in danger, as does the pesticide known as Bt. Where in Washington Can I See One? You can find these butterflies all over Washington state from May until September. They prefer open areas, including prairies, tidal flats and mountain tops. What Can I Do to Help? Encourage your parents not to use chemicals to control the weeds in your backyard. Instead, suggest your family pull them by hand or mulch.
